What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They use word origins, related word forms, and sentence context to work out a likely meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify useful roots and affixes in an unfamiliar word. They can connect the word to related forms and explain how its history, structure, and context support a meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume words with similar spellings share an origin, such as history and story. They may also treat a root's old meaning as the exact modern meaning or ignore context.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: “The witness gave an incredulous look. Using in-, cred, and -ous, explain what incredulous means and how you know.”

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs build word families with root, prefix, and suffix cards, then write a meaning for each completed word.
Ask students to explain how the meanings of credible, credit, creed, and incredulous connect to the Latin root cred.
Play Root Relay, where teams match unfamiliar words to root meanings and earn a point by explaining each match.
Students examine product labels or news headlines, choose three unfamiliar terms, and use an etymology dictionary to explain their meanings.
