What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They use the meanings of those parts, along with sentence context, to infer a clear definition.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can mark the meaningful parts in a new word and state what each contributes. The student combines those clues with context and checks that the definition fits the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any opening or ending letters as an affix, such as reading re in real as meaning again. They may translate each part too literally. They may also ignore sentence context when choosing among possible meanings.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read, “The crew will circumnavigate the island.” Label the useful word parts, then define circumnavigate and explain how the sentence supports your answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix cards to build six words, then have them annotate each part and draft definitions.
Prompt students: “How can word parts and context solve the meaning of inaccessible?” Have them write, then compare reasoning with a partner.
Play Root Match: students pair twelve word cards with root meanings, then score a bonus point by explaining one unfamiliar word.
Collect five terms from science or health labels, such as biodegradable or antibiotic, and annotate the parts that reveal each meaning.
