What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They use the meanings of those parts, along with sentence context, to infer the word or phrase meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can separate an unfamiliar word into meaningful parts and state what each part contributes. They combine that information with context to give a clear, accurate definition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat any familiar letter group as a root. They may assign one fixed meaning to an affix, ignore context, or overlook spelling changes in related words.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “The new law had a retroactive effect, changing taxes owed from last year.” Label the word parts and explain retroactive.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word-part cards to build terms such as transport, preview, and biography, then label and define each part.
Ask students to explain in writing how import, export, and transport share a root but differ because of their prefixes.
Play root bingo by calling definitions such as “life” or “write” while students cover matching roots and explain one completed word.
Have students collect five words from product labels or news headlines, mark their roots and affixes, and infer each meaning.
