What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break unfamiliar words into Greek or Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They use each part, including suffix clues about part of speech, to infer meaning in context.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can break predictable into pre-, dict, and -able, then use those parts to infer its meaning. The student identifies it as an adjective and checks the meaning against the sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any familiar letter group as a root or assume one root always has the same meaning. They may ignore how suffixes such as -able, -tion, and -ist signal parts of speech.

How to Assess It

Give the sentence, “The two groups worked in cooperation to clean the park.” Ask students to label the word parts, identify the part of speech, and explain the meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word-part cards to build words, label each root and affix, and sort completed words by part of speech.

  2. Ask students to explain how the root port connects portable, transport, and transportation, including how each suffix changes the word.

  3. Play a word analysis relay where teams split a displayed word, define each part, identify its part of speech, and infer its meaning.

  4. Have students find three unfamiliar terms in a science or social studies text and use roots, affixes, and context to define them.
