What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use word origins, roots, affixes, and related forms to infer meaning in complex texts. They also interpret familiar borrowed expressions, then confirm each inference with context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can break unfamiliar words into meaningful roots and affixes, connect them to related words, and check the result against context. They can explain common foreign phrases accurately within a passage.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a historical root always gives the full modern meaning. They may translate foreign phrases word for word or confuse related words that share a root.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “The benevolent board created an ad hoc fund after the storm.” Define benevolent and ad hoc, then identify the root, origin, or context clue used.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups root, affix, and definition cards to build and annotate words such as circumspect, malfeasance, and benefactor.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the phrase status quo shapes the meaning of a political commentary excerpt.

  3. Run a phrase-matching relay using cards with expressions such as quid pro quo, per se, and de facto alongside short contexts.

  4. Have students find borrowed phrases in college syllabi, news headlines, or legal notices and rewrite each sentence in plain English.
