What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine the meanings of unfamiliar and multiple-meaning words. They use sentence context, roots, affixes, and reference tools, then explain the evidence for each meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer a word’s meaning and point to context or word parts that support the answer. They confirm the meaning with a reference tool and use the word correctly in a new context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar definition that does not fit the sentence. They may rely on one nearby word, ignore prefixes or roots, or copy a dictionary definition without checking context.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya was meticulous: she checked every measurement twice and corrected even tiny errors.” Define “meticulous,” underline the clues, and use it in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word-root, prefix, suffix, and definition cards to combine, then have them explain how each part shapes the word’s meaning.
Ask students to compare two possible meanings for an unfamiliar word and write which one fits the paragraph, citing specific clues.
Play Context Clue Relay, where teams infer a highlighted word, label the clue type, and earn a point only with evidence.
Have students collect unfamiliar words from menus, instructions, advertisements, or news headlines, then explain how context and word parts reveal each meaning.
