CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.6

Math4th GradeUse place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

The standard

Find whole-number quotients and remainders with up to four-digit dividends and one-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

What this standard means

Students need to divide numbers like 936 ÷ 4 or 3,245 ÷ 5 and explain their thinking, not just get an answer. They should use place value, partial quotients, arrays, area models, and multiplication facts to break the dividend into useful parts.

Mastery looks like choosing a workable strategy, keeping place value straight, finding the quotient and remainder, and proving it with multiplication. Students often get stuck when they ignore zeros, lose track of remainders, or treat digits separately without thinking about value.

Ways to teach it

  • Use base-ten blocks or place value disks to model 524 ÷ 4, then record the matching partial quotients equation.
  • Ask students to explain which is easier, 728 ÷ 4 by hundreds, tens, ones or by friendly chunks, and why.
  • Give 3,156 ÷ 6 on an exit ticket and have students show an area model plus a multiplication check.
  • Use a class party problem: 1,238 stickers shared equally among 7 tables, with students finding leftovers and explaining what they mean.
