What Students Need to Do
- Students solve calculations with decimals through the hundredths place. They use place-value models or drawings, connect them to written steps, and explain why the method works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose an accurate method, keep place values clear, and get a reasonable answer. They can connect a model to written steps and check the result with estimation or an inverse operation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may align the last digits instead of aligning decimal points when adding or subtracting. They may count decimal places mechanically in every operation, including addition and division. They may assume multiplication always makes numbers larger and division always makes them smaller.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Solve 2.45 + 1.7, 5.00 - 2.86, 0.6 × 0.4, and 1.2 ÷ 0.3; model one and explain your steps.

Use base-ten blocks on place-value mats to model 2.35 + 1.7, regrouping before recording each written step.
Have students explain why 3.6 ÷ 0.4 equals 9 using a drawing and the equivalent equation 36 ÷ 4.
