CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.7
The standard
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

What this standard means
Students need to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals through hundredths. They should use base-ten blocks, grids, number lines, or place-value charts before moving to written methods. They also need to explain why the digits move or line up, not just follow a rule.
Mastery looks like choosing a sensible strategy, estimating first, calculating accurately, and explaining the place-value thinking behind each step. Students often get stuck lining up digits instead of place values, placing the decimal point in products or quotients, and treating 0.4 as smaller than 0.35 because 4 is less than 35.
Ways to teach it
- Have students model 2.4 plus 1.35 with hundredths grids, then write the matching vertical addition problem underneath.
- Ask students to explain in writing why 3.6 times 0.4 is much less than 3.6 times 4.
- Use four exit problems, one each for decimal addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and require a one-sentence place-value explanation.
- Give students a grocery receipt with prices to hundredths and ask them to find totals, differences, and equal-share costs.
