CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.6

Math5th GradePerform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

The standard

Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

What this standard means

Students need to divide whole numbers with dividends up to 4 digits and divisors up to 2 digits. They should use place value, partial quotients, area models, arrays, and multiplication checks, not just memorize long division steps.

Mastery looks like choosing reasonable partial quotients, recording the work clearly, and explaining why each step makes sense. Students often get stuck estimating with two-digit divisors, keeping place values straight, and knowing what to do with remainders. They may also subtract incorrectly or lose track of the original problem.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students build 936 ÷ 24 with base-ten blocks or a sketched area model, then label each partial quotient on the model.
  • Ask students to explain which first partial quotient is better for 1,248 ÷ 32, 10 or 40, and justify with multiplication.
  • Give three division problems and have students circle the error in a worked partial-quotients solution, then correct it.
  • Use a classroom supply order, such as 1,176 pencils packed equally into boxes of 24, and ask how many full boxes are made.
