The standard
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.

What this standard means
Students need to collect or read category data, then make picture graphs and bar graphs where one symbol or square stands for more than one item. They must choose a clear scale, label categories, and use the graph to answer questions.
Mastery means students can read the key, count by the scale, compare categories, and solve one-step or two-step questions like “how many more” or “how many fewer.” Common trouble spots are forgetting the scale, counting each picture as one, uneven bar lengths, and mixing up subtraction steps in comparison problems.
Ways to teach it
- Have students survey classmates about favorite fruit, then build a scaled bar graph where each square equals 2 votes.
- Ask students to write two questions about a graph, one using “how many more” and one using “how many fewer.”
- Show a scaled picture graph and ask students to answer three comparison questions on an index card.
- Use a school lunch menu tally from one week to graph how many students chose each lunch option.
