The standard
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

What this standard means
Students need to collect or use a small data set with up to four groups, then show it as a picture graph and a bar graph. Each picture or bar step counts as one. They also need to answer questions using the graph, like how many in all, how many more, or how many fewer.
Mastery looks like a neat graph with labels, equal spacing, accurate counts, and correct answers based on the data. Students often mix up category labels, count pictures instead of data, make uneven bars, or answer from memory instead of reading the graph.
Ways to teach it
- Have students sort a handful of pattern blocks by shape, tally each group, then make a picture graph and a single-unit bar graph.
- Ask, “Which category has the most, which has the fewest, and how many more?” using a class snack choice graph.
- Show a four-category bar graph and ask students to write the total, the difference between two bars, and one true comparison sentence.
- Survey the class about how they get to school, then graph the results and discuss what the data tells about the class.
