What This Standard Means
Students need to write to teach a reader about a topic. They should choose a clear topic, group related facts, use headings or sections when helpful, add definitions and examples, and use linking words like also, because, another, and for example.
Mastery looks like a focused piece that is easy to follow from beginning to end. The facts fit the topic, the order makes sense, and the ending wraps up the information. Students often get stuck by listing random facts, copying source sentences, writing opinions instead of explanations, or using weak introductions and conclusions.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students sort fact cards about an animal into three labeled groups, then turn each group into one paragraph.
- Ask students to write: What would a new student need to know about our classroom routines, and why?
- Give students one paragraph and ask them to underline the topic sentence, circle two facts, and box one linking word.
- Have students write a short guide explaining how to care for a class plant, pet, or shared supply area.
