What This Standard Means

Students need to set up an informational piece so a reader knows the subject right away. They should sort facts into clear groups, then use paragraphs, section titles, pictures, captions, or a simple digital feature when those choices help the reader understand.

Mastery looks like an article or report with a clear opening, logical sections, and support features that match the content. Students often get stuck by listing facts in random order, making headings too vague, or adding pictures that decorate instead of explain.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students mixed fact cards about one animal, then have them sort the cards into labeled paragraph piles before drafting.
  • Ask students to write: What should my reader understand first, and which facts belong together under one heading?
  • Hand students a short draft and ask them to circle the topic sentence, box headings, and star one useful visual.
  • Show a kids magazine article and have students label how headings, photos, captions, and sections help readers find information.
