CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.2d
The Standard
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to choose words that fit the topic and help the reader understand it clearly. They should replace vague words like stuff, things, good, and bad with exact nouns, verbs, and adjectives. They also need to use topic words correctly, like erosion, habitat, predator, narrator, or equivalent fractions.
Mastery looks like a clear explanation where key terms are accurate and useful, not just added to sound smart. Students often get stuck using big words incorrectly, repeating the same simple word, or forgetting to define terms a reader may not know.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a vague paragraph about volcanoes and have them revise it using a word bank with magma, lava, crater, eruption, and ash.
- Ask students to explain how precise words change a reader’s understanding, using the prompt, Which word choice helped most, and why?
- Have students underline three domain words in their draft and circle one vague word they can replace before turning it in.
- Show a simple science article label or park sign, then ask students to list the exact words that teach the topic clearly.
