CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.2d
The Standard
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to choose words that fit the topic exactly, not vague words like stuff, things, good, or bad. They also need to use subject words correctly, such as erosion, denominator, habitat, or amendment, when those words help explain the idea.
Mastery looks like an explanation that sounds clear, accurate, and specific. A reader should learn the topic without guessing what the student means. Students often get stuck by overusing big words they do not understand, repeating the same term too often, or leaving out needed definitions for readers.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a vague paragraph about volcanoes and have them replace five weak words using a word bank and science notes.
- Ask students to explain, in writing, which three vocabulary words a reader must know before understanding their topic.
- Have students highlight domain words in their draft, then circle any vague words and revise two sentences.
- Show a short recipe, weather report, or sports article, and have students list the precise words that make it clear.
