CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.2d
The Standard
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to choose words that explain a topic clearly and exactly. They should use subject-specific terms when they fit, not vague words like stuff, thing, good, or bad. They also need to define or explain key terms so readers are not lost.
Mastery looks like an informative paragraph where the vocabulary matches the topic and helps the reader understand it. Students often get stuck by adding big words that do not fit, using terms without explaining them, or repeating general words instead of naming the exact idea, object, action, or process.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give students a vague science paragraph and have them replace ten weak words with exact terms from a word bank.
- Discussion or writing prompt: Ask students, “Which word is more exact, and why: pollution, runoff, or contamination?” using text evidence.
- Quick assessment: Have students revise three vague sentences by adding precise nouns, active verbs, and one domain-specific term.
- Real-world connection: Bring in a sports article, recipe, or game guide and have students highlight the expert vocabulary that helps readers understand.
