The Standard
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards
What This Standard Means
Students need to write an informational piece that teaches the reader about one topic. They should introduce the topic, group related facts, use linking words, add details or examples, and end with a clear closing sentence or section.
Mastery looks like a focused piece that stays on topic and is easy to follow. Students often get stuck writing a list of facts with no order, mixing in opinions, or ending suddenly. Many need help turning notes into connected sentences.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students sort fact cards about frogs into groups, then use each group to write one paragraph with a heading.
- Ask students to write: What do you know about this topic, and what facts would help a reader understand it better?
- Give students a short draft and have them underline the topic sentence, three facts, two linking words, and the closing sentence.
- Show a simple museum sign or animal article, then have students name how it teaches facts clearly.
