What This Standard Means
Students need to write to teach a reader about one clear topic. They should name the topic at the start, add true facts, explain key words when needed, and end with a sentence that wraps up the piece.
Mastery looks like a short piece with a clear beginning, several connected facts, simple definitions, and a closing that fits. Students often list random facts, forget to explain vocabulary, or write an opinion instead of information. Many need help staying on one topic and turning notes into complete sentences.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a picture card of an animal, then have them sort fact strips into beginning, middle, and ending for a class paragraph.
- Ask students to write: What is one thing you know a lot about, and what three facts could you teach someone?
- Hand students a four-box checklist: topic, two facts, one definition, closing sentence, and have them mark their own draft.
- Bring in a simple school tool, like a pencil sharpener, and write a class explanation of what it is and how it helps.
