What This Standard Means

Students need to explain a topic clearly, using facts, examples, definitions, and details that fit the purpose. They must choose the best information, organize it in a way readers can follow, and show how the parts connect. Younger students may write a labeled page or short paragraph. Older students may write essays, reports, or explanations using sources.

Mastery looks like clear focus, accurate information, logical order, and enough explanation so the reader understands the idea. Students often get stuck copying facts, listing details without explaining them, using weak transitions, or choosing evidence that does not match the main point.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students sort fact cards about one topic into headings, then use each group to draft one clear explanatory paragraph.
  • Ask students to write: What does a reader need to understand first, next, and last about this topic?
  • Give a one-paragraph exit ticket where students explain a new term using a definition, example, and non-example.
  • Show a product review, recipe, or how-to article, then mark where the writer explains information clearly for the reader.
