What This Standard Means

Students need to explain a complex topic clearly, not just report facts. They must choose useful information, organize it in a way that helps the reader, define key terms, connect ideas, and analyze why the information matters. Strong writing uses evidence, examples, transitions, precise language, and a clear structure.

Mastery looks like a focused piece that teaches the reader something complicated without confusion or gaps. Students often get stuck by listing facts, using vague claims, dropping in evidence without explanation, or choosing an organization that does not match the topic.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students five mixed source notes on sleep and learning, then have them sort, label, and outline a clear explanatory article.
  • Ask students to explain which organization fits a topic best, cause-effect, comparison, or problem-solution, and justify their choice in writing.
  • Use a one-paragraph exit ticket where students define a complex term, give one example, and explain its importance.
  • Have students analyze a college financial aid webpage and rewrite one section so a first-generation applicant can understand it.
