The Standard

Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to write clear explanatory pieces that teach a reader about a topic. They must choose useful facts, examples, definitions, and details, then organize them in a way that makes sense. They also need to explain why the information matters, not just list it.

Mastery looks like a focused introduction, grouped ideas, smooth transitions, accurate evidence, and a conclusion that wraps up the explanation. Students often get stuck choosing too much information, copying sources, or writing facts without analysis. Many also need help turning notes into paragraphs with topic sentences and clear links between ideas.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students sort source note cards into three paragraph groups, then label each group with a clear subtopic heading.
  • Ask students to explain how one chosen fact helps the reader understand the topic better, using two or three sentences.
  • Give students a paragraph and have them underline the claim, circle evidence, and star the explanation.
  • Have students write a one-page guide explaining a school rule, cafeteria system, or phone policy for a new student.
