What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a focused topic and gather useful facts, examples, definitions, and quotations. They group related information, explain connections, use clear transitions and precise language, and write a fitting conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The writing has a focused introduction, logical sections, and details that clearly develop the topic. The student uses precise words, connects ideas with transitions, maintains an objective tone, and closes the explanation effectively.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how the facts connect to the topic. They may include unrelated details, copy source wording, use casual opinions, or end without a clear conclusion.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In six to eight sentences, explain how to borrow a library book. Include an introduction, three ordered details, transitions, and a conclusion.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort printed volcano fact cards into labeled sections, remove irrelevant facts, and draft one organized paragraph.
Ask students to write: Which three details would best help a new student understand our school schedule, and why?
Play a transition match game where teams pair words such as because, however, and for example with the relationships they show.
Students interview the librarian, then create a one-page guide explaining how to find and check out a book.
