CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.2
The Standard
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards
What This Standard Means
Students need to write clear informative pieces that explain a topic, not argue a claim or tell a story. They choose relevant facts, definitions, examples, and details, then organize them with an introduction, grouped sections, transitions, precise language, and a conclusion.
Mastery looks like a reader learning something without getting lost. The writing stays focused, uses trustworthy information, explains why details matter, and avoids dumping random facts. Students often struggle with narrowing the topic, sorting notes into sections, and adding analysis instead of copying source sentences.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students mixed fact cards about volcanoes and have them sort them into labeled body paragraphs before drafting an explanatory article.
- Ask students to write one paragraph explaining how two details from a source help a reader understand the topic.
- Use a five-minute exit slip: topic, three grouped details, one transition, and one sentence explaining why a detail matters.
- Have students read a clear instruction page, like a school lunch menu guide, and identify how sections help readers find information.
