What Students Need to Do: Students choose words and phrases that clearly connect ideas in informational writing. They use transitions to show sequence, comparison, contrast, cause, effect, or examples.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect sentences and paragraphs with transitions that match the relationship between ideas. Readers can tell when the writer is adding, contrasting, explaining a cause, or giving an example.
Common Misconceptions: Students may choose transitions that sound formal but show the wrong relationship, such as using “therefore” for a contrast. They may also repeat one transition or add transitions where ideas do not connect.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Write three sentences about school lunch. Use and underline one transition showing cause and one showing contrast.

Lesson moves

Give pairs sentence strips and transition cards, then have them match each pair with a transition and explain the relationship.
Ask students to explain how two school rules are similar or different, using at least three transitions in their response.
Play Transition Swap: students replace a transition in a paragraph, then decide whether the meaning stays accurate or changes.
Have students write directions for a familiar task, using transitions to show sequence, cause, and examples.
