ELA7th GradeText Types and Purposes

The Standard

Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Writing Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to explain a topic clearly, not just list facts. They choose relevant details, organize them in a logical order, and use analysis to show what the information means. They should include an introduction, useful headings or transitions, precise language, and a conclusion that fits the explanation.

Mastery looks like a focused piece where every paragraph has a clear job and evidence is explained. Students often get stuck by copying source facts, adding unrelated details, or making claims without explaining them. They may also organize by source instead of by idea.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students three short source cards on school start times, then have them sort facts into introduction, body sections, and conclusion.
  • Ask students to write: Which detail best explains the topic, and how does it help the reader understand it?
  • Use a one-paragraph exit ticket where students must include a topic sentence, two relevant facts, and one explanation sentence.
  • Have students read a simple product label or app review, then explain how its details help consumers make a decision.
