ELAGrades 9–10Conventions of Standard English

The Standard

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Language Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to edit their own writing for correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They should choose punctuation that fits the sentence, use commas and semicolons with control, capitalize proper nouns and titles correctly, and catch spelling errors that spell-check may miss.

Mastery looks like clean, readable writing across drafts, not just perfect answers on a worksheet. Students often miss comma splices, apostrophes, capitalization in titles, homophones, and punctuation around quotations. They may know rules in isolation but forget them when writing longer pieces.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a messy paragraph from a sample essay and have them mark capitalization, punctuation, and spelling fixes with colored pens.
  • Ask students to explain which punctuation choice best joins two related sentences, then defend the choice in one written sentence.
  • Use a five-sentence exit ticket with one error per sentence, and have students correct each error without using notes.
  • Show a screenshot of a school email draft and have students revise it so it sounds polished and professional.
