What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students edit writing for accurate capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They use semicolons, conjunctive adverbs, and colons correctly, then check spelling in context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students produce clean paragraphs with accurate capitalization and spelling. They use semicolons between related complete sentences, punctuate conjunctive adverbs correctly, and place colons after complete clauses.

Common Misconceptions

Students often join complete sentences with only a comma or place a semicolon before a fragment. They may put a colon after an incomplete clause, capitalize common nouns, or trust spell-check without checking context.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “On monday I packed three things, a notebook, pencils, and a calender however I forgot my lunch.” Students correct every error and label each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips to combine using semicolons, conjunctive adverbs, or colons, then have them explain each punctuation choice.

  2. Ask students to revise a paragraph with punctuation errors and write one sentence explaining their most significant correction.

  3. Run a punctuation relay where teams correct projected sentences, earning a point only when they can state the rule used.

  4. Have students proofread a school announcement or email draft for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling before comparing revisions.
