What This Standard Means
Students need to edit their own writing for grade-level conventions. They should use capitalization correctly, spell common and academic words accurately, and choose punctuation that makes meaning clear. In grade 8, that includes using commas, ellipses, and dashes when they fit the sentence and the writer’s purpose.
Mastery looks like clean, readable writing where errors do not distract the reader. Students can explain why they used a punctuation mark and can fix mistakes in a draft. Common trouble spots are overusing ellipses, putting commas wherever they pause, mixing up homophones, and missing errors because they only read for ideas.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a paragraph with missing punctuation and spelling errors, then have pairs mark edits with colored pencils and justify three changes.
- Ask students to write four sentences that show interruption, hesitation, a list, and emphasis, then explain their punctuation choices.
- Use a five-sentence exit ticket with one capitalization, punctuation, or spelling error in each sentence for students to correct.
- Bring in a school email or announcement, remove key punctuation, and discuss how the meaning or tone changes.
