What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students edit sentences and drafts so capitalization, punctuation, and spelling are accurate. They choose marks that show pauses, breaks, and omitted words clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce clean writing with correct capitals, spelling, and end punctuation. They use commas, dashes, and ellipses deliberately, then spot and fix errors during revision.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use commas, dashes, and ellipses as if they have the same purpose. They may capitalize common nouns or rely on spellcheck, which can miss homophone errors.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence paragraph with eight capitalization, punctuation, and spelling errors. Ask them to rewrite it correctly and explain one punctuation change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs punctuation cards and a flawed paragraph, then have them place each card where it belongs and justify every choice.
Ask students to write six sentences explaining how punctuation can change a reader’s pace, using two original examples.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time in projected sentences and earn points for accurate explanations.
Have students proofread a school announcement or email draft, correcting errors before comparing their version with a polished copy.
