ELA8th GradeConventions of Standard English

The Standard

Spell correctly.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to spell grade-level words correctly in their own writing, not just on weekly tests. They should use patterns, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and reference tools to check themselves before turning work in.

Mastery looks like clean spelling in essays, responses, notes, and final drafts, with few errors that distract the reader. Students often get stuck on homophones, doubled consonants, suffix changes, and academic words from reading. Many can fix spelling when prompted but do not yet proofread independently.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a paragraph with ten common eighth-grade spelling errors, then have pairs correct it using dictionaries or spell-check notes.
  • Ask students to explain how one misspelled word could change meaning or credibility in an argument paragraph.
  • Use a three-minute exit ticket where students correct five words pulled from recent class writing.
  • Show students a job application, email, or school announcement, then identify where spelling errors would affect the reader’s trust.
