CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.2c
The Standard
Spell correctly.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to spell grade-level words accurately in final writing, including commonly confused words, academic terms, and words with tricky patterns. They should use tools well, such as dictionaries, spellcheck, word walls, and personal spelling logs, but not depend on them blindly.
Mastery looks like clean, readable writing where spelling mistakes do not distract the reader. Students often get stuck with homophones, dropped letters, suffix changes, and words spellcheck misses, like form instead of from. They also may spell correctly on quizzes but forget during drafting, so the habit has to carry into revision.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students a paragraph with ten spelling errors and have them correct it using a dictionary, then explain three fixes in the margin.
- Ask students to write about a time a spelling mistake changed the meaning or tone of a message.
- Collect one paragraph from today’s draft and mark only spelling errors, then have students submit a corrected copy before leaving.
- Show screenshots of job applications, menus, or school emails with spelling errors and ask students how each error affects credibility.
