What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use accepted spelling in essays, responses, and other finished writing. They proofread carefully and use dictionaries, word parts, and digital tools to check uncertain words.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce clean final drafts with few spelling errors. They notice questionable words and confirm them with a dictionary, word parts, or context rather than relying only on spell-check.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust spell-check even when a misspelled word becomes another valid word, such as “their” for “there.” They may also spell unfamiliar words only by sound or confuse common suffixes.
How to Assess It
- Give students a six-sentence paragraph containing eight spelling errors, including homophones and suffix errors. Ask them to correct each error and explain two corrections.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards with roots and suffixes, then have them build and record correctly spelled words such as commitment and noticeable.
Ask students to explain why spell-check might miss “Your going to loose the game,” then rewrite the sentence correctly.
Run a spelling error hunt using a short paragraph, awarding one point for each correction and one point for an accurate explanation.
Compare spelling in a professional email and a casual text, then revise the text for a job application.
