ELA6th GradeConventions of Standard English

The Standard

Spell correctly.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to spell grade-level words correctly in their own writing, not just on a Friday test. They should use patterns, word parts, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and reference tools to check spelling when they are unsure.

Mastery looks like mostly clean spelling in drafts and final pieces, plus students noticing and fixing errors during revision. Common trouble spots include homophones, unstressed vowels, doubled consonants, suffix changes, and words copied incorrectly from sources.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on: Give pairs word cards with prefixes, roots, and suffixes, then have them build, spell, and sort words by spelling rule.
  • Prompt: Ask students to explain how they would check the spelling of a tricky word without asking the teacher.
  • Quick assessment: Dictate five commonly misspelled words from current reading, then have students correct them using a dictionary or spell-check notes.
  • Real-world connection: Show a menu, flyer, or school notice with spelling errors, then have students revise it for a public audience.
