What Students Need to Do
- Students write grade-level words accurately in context. They check uncertain words with dictionaries, spell-check tools, and known word patterns, then correct errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students consistently spell common grade-level words correctly in drafts and final work. They notice likely errors, use a reliable reference, and apply corrections accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on how a word sounds, which fails with silent letters, doubled consonants, and unstressed vowels. They may trust spell-check without checking whether the suggested word fits the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with five misspelled words in sentences: separate, necessary, beginning, definitely, and receive. Students correct each word and circle one they verified with a dictionary.

Have pairs build words with letter tiles, adding prefixes and suffixes to roots such as rely, occur, and hope.
Ask students to explain in writing which spelling strategy helps them remember necessary, separate, or definitely.

Students proofread a mock school announcement, correct every spelling error, and explain how errors could confuse readers.
