What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use sound patterns, syllables, roots, and affixes to write grade-level words accurately. They proofread their own work and use a dictionary when a spelling is uncertain.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student consistently writes common and content-area words accurately in complete sentences. When unsure, the student tests likely forms, checks a reliable source, and fixes the error.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely only on how a word sounds, which fails with words like separate, privilege, and definitely. They may also miss changes when adding suffixes, such as dropping a final e or doubling a consonant.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: "Correct the three misspelled words in this sentence: The begining of the arguement was definately confusing. Explain one correction."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to sort by spelling change: keep the final e, drop it, or double the final consonant.
Ask students to explain in writing why hoping and hopping use different consonant patterns, then compare explanations with a partner.
Run a proofreading relay where teams correct one misspelled word at a time in a short paragraph and name the pattern used.
Have students proofread a mock school announcement, verify uncertain words with dictionaries, and submit a clean version for the bulletin board.
