ELA7th GradeConventions of Standard English

The Standard

Spell correctly.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to spell grade-level words correctly in everyday writing, not just on isolated spelling tests. They should use patterns, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and reliable references to check words before turning work in.

Mastery looks like clean final drafts with few spelling errors, including academic words and commonly confused words. Students often get stuck when spellcheck misses real-word errors, when suffixes change the base word, or when they rush and skip proofreading.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students sort word cards by spelling pattern, such as doubling final consonants, dropping silent e, or changing y to i.
  • Ask students to revise a paragraph and explain three spelling fixes they made, including the rule or resource they used.
  • Give a five-word exit check using current vocabulary, then have students circle the word they were least sure about.
  • Show screenshots where autocorrect picks the wrong word, and ask students to explain how a writer should catch the mistake.
