What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use capitals correctly, punctuate dialogue and quotations, and place a comma before a coordinating conjunction in a compound sentence. They spell grade-level words accurately. They use a dictionary or digital reference to check uncertain spellings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- In a short paragraph, students consistently capitalize names and sentence beginnings, mark spoken words with commas and quotation marks, and punctuate compound sentences. They correct spelling errors independently with a reference tool.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may put quotation marks around the whole sentence instead of only the speaker’s exact words. They often omit the comma before and, but, or so when both sides are complete sentences. They may trust spell-check without checking whether the suggested word fits the meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: Correct all errors in: maria said “we can walk to the libary but it closes soon”. Then ask them to name the tool they would use to check libary.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs cut apart a dialogue paragraph, then rebuild it with capitalization, commas, quotation marks, and end punctuation in the correct places.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining how punctuation changes the meaning of “Let’s eat, Grandma” and “Let’s eat Grandma.”
Play an editing relay where teams correct one capitalization, punctuation, or spelling error before passing the paragraph to the next player.
Students edit a sample class announcement for names, quotations, compound sentences, and spelling before posting the corrected version.
