Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Language Standards
What This Standard Means
Students need to write simple sentences that look finished and readable. They should use capital letters for names, dates, and sentence beginnings. They should use end marks correctly. They should spell common words, word wall words, and taught spelling patterns well enough for a reader to understand.
Mastery looks like a first grader checking a sentence and fixing most errors before sharing it. Students often forget capitals after rereading, mix up periods and question marks, or spell every word by sound without checking known words. They need short, daily practice tied to real writing.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students sentence strips with missing capitals and end marks, then have them fix each strip with markers and read it aloud.
- Ask students to write two sentences about recess, then circle capitals and underline end marks before sharing with a partner.
- Show one student sentence with three errors, and have students rewrite it correctly on whiteboards in two minutes.
- Bring in a lunch menu or class note, and have students find capitals, periods, question marks, and correctly spelled high-frequency words.
