CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.2d
The Standard
Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring irregular words.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
First graders need to spell pattern words the expected way, like words with short vowels, blends, digraphs, silent e, and common word families. They also need to spell high-use tricky words from memory, such as said, was, they, and come.
Mastery shows up in daily writing, not just on a spelling test. Students use sounds and known patterns to spell new words, then check familiar words they should know. They often get stuck when irregular words do not match the sounds, or when they overuse one pattern, like writing maik for make.
Ways to Teach It
- Build words with letter tiles using one pattern, such as -ight, then have students write three matching words in a sentence.
- Ask students, “Which word in your writing did you spell by pattern, and which word did you spell from memory?”
- Dictate five words, three pattern words and two irregular words, then sort mistakes by pattern error or memory word error.
- Have students read a lunch menu or classroom notice and circle words they can spell because they see them often.
