ELA1st GradePhonics and Word Recognition

The Standard

Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to read common sight words that do not follow the phonics patterns they have learned yet. They should recognize words like said, was, one, two, have, do, and are quickly enough that they do not stop and sound out every letter.

Mastery looks like reading these words in isolation and in simple sentences with accuracy and confidence. Students often get stuck by trying to decode every part of the word, mixing up visually similar words, or reading the word correctly on a card but missing it in connected text.

Ways to Teach It

  • Make word cards for five irregular words, then have students build each word with magnetic letters and circle the tricky part.
  • Ask students to write one sentence using two sight words from the week, then read it to a partner.
  • Flash ten taught sight words for three seconds each and note which ones students read automatically.
  • Have students find three irregular words on a lunch menu, classroom sign, or simple take-home book.
