What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn common words with parts that do not follow familiar sound patterns. They read these words accurately and quickly in isolation and in connected text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read taught words such as said, was, of, and are without long pauses. They recognize the same words in lists, sentences, and simple books.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may try to sound out every letter using regular patterns, producing errors such as reading said to rhyme with paid. They may also recognize a word on a card but miss it within a sentence.
How to Assess It
- Show students said, was, of, are, come, and have. Ask them to read each word, then read two of them in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs letter tiles to build said, was, of, and are, then have them circle the unexpected spelling in each word.
Ask, “Which part of each word follows a sound pattern, and which part must we remember?” then have students explain one choice.
Play word-card bingo with ten recently taught words, requiring students to read each winning word aloud before claiming bingo.
Hunt for target words on classroom labels, lunch menus, and book covers, then record each word and where it appeared.
