CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.3f
The Standard
Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to read common high-frequency words that do not follow regular phonics patterns, such as said, one, two, does, because, and again. They should recognize these words quickly in isolation and in connected text, not spend all their energy trying to sound them out.
Mastery looks like smooth reading of familiar irregular words in books, poems, directions, and student writing. Students often get stuck by guessing from the first letter, over-sounding words that need to be memorized in parts, or reading the word correctly on a flashcard but missing it in a sentence.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students build tricky words with magnetic letters, then circle the irregular part with a dry erase marker.
- Ask students to write, 'The tricky part in the word because is ___,' then explain it to a partner.
- Show five learned irregular words on cards, then have students read them in a sentence strip for a quick check.
- Bring in a lunch menu or classroom notice and have students highlight irregular words they can read automatically.
