The Standard

Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words (e.g., cage → badge; boy → boil).

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to use spelling patterns they already know to spell new words in their own writing. They should notice patterns like long vowel teams, word endings, and changes in sound, then apply them instead of guessing one letter at a time.

Mastery looks like a student hearing or thinking of a word, connecting it to a known pattern, and spelling it close to correctly. Students often get stuck when two patterns sound alike, like oi and oy, or when a new word has an extra consonant or syllable.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students sort word cards into pattern groups, then add two new words to each group on sticky notes.
  • Ask students to write, “I can spell ___ because it is like ___,” using words from their own writing.
  • Dictate five new words that follow taught patterns and have students circle the part that helped them spell each one.
  • Bring in grocery labels or classroom signs and have students find words that match the week’s spelling pattern.
