Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to try spelling words they have not memorized by listening for sounds and writing letters that match. They should stretch a word, hear beginning, middle, and ending sounds, and use patterns they already know, like short vowels, blends, digraphs, and word families.

Mastery looks like readable invented spelling that shows sound awareness, such as writing “truk” for “truck” or “chran” for “train.” Students often miss vowel sounds, leave out ending sounds, or write only the first sound they hear. Some wait for the teacher to spell every word, so they need practice taking a smart risk.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students picture cards, have them stretch each word with a rubber band, then write the sounds they hear on whiteboards.
  • Ask students to write one sentence about recess, then circle one word they spelled by listening for sounds and explain their choices.
  • Say three untaught words, such as nest, chip, and frog, and have students write each one without help on sticky notes.
  • Show a grocery list with kid spelling, like bred and apls, and ask students how the spellings still help someone read it.
