What This Standard Means

Students need to know when a word does not look right and use a simple tool to fix it. They should be able to use a classroom word wall, personal dictionary, beginner dictionary, or digital dictionary with help. They also need to check the first letter, use alphabetical order, and compare the spelling they find to their draft.

Mastery looks like a student pausing during writing, finding the word, and correcting it without guessing over and over. Common sticking points are looking under the wrong first letter, not knowing ABC order well enough, and copying the word incorrectly after finding it.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give partners five misspelled animal words and a beginner dictionary, then have them find and rewrite each word correctly on sticky notes.
  • Ask students to write, “When I get stuck spelling a word, I can try…” and list three tools from the classroom.
  • During writing time, point to one circled word in each student’s draft and ask, “What tool will help you check this spelling?”
  • Bring in a grocery list with misspelled items, then have students use a store flyer or dictionary to correct the words.
