What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use a beginner dictionary or another reference to check words they are unsure about. They find the correct entry and fix the spelling in their writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student notices when a spelling may be wrong and finds the intended word using alphabetical order. The student copies the entry spelling accurately and corrects the original writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may search for a word using every letter of their incorrect spelling. They may also choose a similar-looking entry without checking that it matches the intended word.

How to Assess It

Give students a beginner dictionary and the sentence, "The rabit hid in the gardin." Ask them to correct both spellings and record each entry's page number.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place five misspelled animal labels beside toy animals, then have students use beginner dictionaries to rewrite each label correctly.

  2. Ask students to write the steps they would follow to check an uncertain spelling in a dictionary.

  3. Play Dictionary Detective, where pairs draw a misspelled word card, find the correct entry, and point to it for one point.

  4. Have students proofread a class party invitation and use dictionaries to correct misspelled food, game, and place words.
