What Students Need to Do: Students use a beginner dictionary or classroom word list to confirm how a word is spelled. They find the correct entry, compare it with their draft, and fix any error.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students locate words by using alphabetical order and guide words. They compare the entry with their own spelling, confirm the meaning, and make an accurate correction.
Common Misconceptions: Students may search for a word using their incorrect first letter or expect the dictionary to list every word form. Some copy the first similar-looking entry without checking its meaning.
How to Assess It: Give each student a dictionary and the sentence, “We stayed inside becaus it rained.” Ask them to check and rewrite the misspelled word correctly.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards with possible spelling errors, then have them use dictionaries to sort the cards into correct and incorrect groups.
Ask students to explain in writing how guide words helped them find and correct one misspelled word.
Play a dictionary race where teams locate a called word, record its spelling, and read its meaning before earning a point.
Have students proofread a classroom menu, sign, or flyer and use dictionaries to verify three uncertain spellings.
