ELA6th GradeVocabulary Acquisition and Use

The Standard

Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to use print and digital reference tools on purpose. They should know which tool fits the job, then use it to check pronunciation, meaning, exact word choice, or part of speech. They also need to read entries carefully, including syllables, guide words, multiple meanings, labels, and example sentences.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “In this sentence, conduct is a noun, not a verb,” and proving it with a dictionary entry. Students often grab the first definition, ignore context, or use a thesaurus word that does not fit the sentence. They also confuse pronunciation marks and parts of speech labels.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a dictionary page and five target words, then have them highlight pronunciation, part of speech, and the best definition for each sentence.
  • Ask students to explain in writing how the meaning of a word changes when its part of speech changes, using record or object.
  • Show three dictionary entries for one word and have students choose the meaning that fits a sentence, with one sentence of proof.
  • Bring in a medicine label, game instructions, or recipe, then have students use a glossary or dictionary to clarify three unfamiliar words.
