CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.2c
The Standard
Use commas in dates and to separate single words in a series.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to place commas correctly when writing a full date, such as after the day number and before the year. They also need to use commas between single words in a list, like items, names, or colors.
Mastery looks like clean, readable sentences where the reader can tell the date and list parts easily. Students often forget the comma before the year, put commas after every word including the last one, or leave commas out when they are focused on spelling.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students word cards for Monday, March, 4, 2024, apples, bananas, grapes, and have them build and punctuate sentences with comma cards.
- Ask students to write: What three foods would you pack for a picnic, and what is today's full date?
- Show three sentences on the board, and have students hold up thumbs for correct commas or fix them on mini whiteboards.
- Bring in a class calendar and lunch menu, then have students copy one date and one menu list using commas correctly.
