What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students check their writing for correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They decide when adjacent adjectives need a comma and use reference tools when unsure about spelling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce writing with correct capitals, punctuation, and spelling. They use commas between equal adjectives and can explain why the comma belongs there.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place commas between every pair of adjectives, even when the adjectives are not equal. They may rely on spellcheck, miss homophone errors, or capitalize common nouns unnecessarily.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to correct: “On monday, Maya carried her bag into the noisy crowded gym because she beleived the coachs whistle had sounded.” Have them explain each change.

Ways to Teach It
Use adjective cards to build noun phrases, then test whether adjectives can switch order or take and before adding a comma.
Compare “a bright, cheerful room” with “three large windows,” then write why only one phrase needs a comma.
Run an editing relay where teams correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling errors in a short paragraph, one change per turn.
Proofread a mock school announcement for errors, then create a clean copy ready to post in the hallway.
