ELA7th GradeConventions of Standard English

The Standard

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Language Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to edit their own writing for correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. In grade 7, that includes using commas, coordinating adjectives, and spelling grade-level words correctly. They should know the rule, apply it while drafting, and catch errors during revision.

Mastery looks like clean writing that does not make the reader stop to decode meaning. Students often struggle with comma placement, especially with clauses and adjectives. They may also rely on spellcheck too much, miss homophones, or forget to proofread after revising content.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a paragraph with missing commas, capitalization errors, and misspelled words, then have pairs edit with colored pencils and explain each fix.
  • Ask students to write three sentences using coordinate adjectives, then explain how the comma changes the rhythm and meaning.
  • Use a five-question exit ticket with one capitalization item, two comma items, one spelling item, and one sentence to proofread.
  • Show a short school announcement or menu, then have students find and correct convention errors before discussing why accuracy matters.
