Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students observe objects and describe their color, shape, form, texture, size, and weight. They compare two objects using words such as larger, smaller, heavier, and lighter.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can describe one object with several accurate property words. The student can compare two objects and use observation or a balance to support the comparison.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name what an object is instead of describing its properties. They may think the larger object is always heavier or confuse texture words such as smooth, rough, soft, and hard.
How to Assess It: Give each student two classroom objects and ask, “Describe each object, then tell which is larger and which is heavier.” Provide a balance if needed.

Lesson moves

Set out buttons, blocks, fabric, and stones for students to sort by color, shape, texture, size, and weight.
Ask, “How could you describe this object without naming it?” and record students’ property words on a chart.
Play a mystery object game where one student gives three property clues and classmates identify the hidden object.
Compare grocery items by size, texture, shape, and weight, then discuss how shoppers use these properties.
