What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe objects and name the colors they see. They use color words to describe, compare, and sort objects.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name familiar colors on classroom objects and pictures. They can sort objects by color and explain how they made each group.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse color with another feature, such as shape or size. They may think an object always has one expected color, such as every apple being red.
How to Assess It
- Show a red block, blue button, and yellow paper square. Ask each student to name each color, then find a classroom object with a matching color.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs colored buttons and cups marked with color dots, then have them sort the buttons and name each group.
Show a multicolored sock and ask students to name every color they see and point to its location.
Play Color I Spy by naming a color, then having students point to a matching object and name it.
Examine traffic lights or grocery packages in photos, then discuss how color helps people find information.
