What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build and test closed circuits, then identify materials that let current pass or block it. They generate static charge, trace electrical energy changing form, and observe that current in a wire creates a magnetic field.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a battery, bulb, wires, and test materials, students can complete the circuit and predict which materials will conduct. They can distinguish static charge from current and identify radiant, mechanical, or thermal outputs in common devices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think electricity moves through an open circuit or that current is used up before returning to the battery. They may confuse static charge with current. They may also assume that only permanent magnets create magnetic fields.
How to Assess It
- Give students a circuit diagram with one gap. Ask them to close it, name a material that could fill the gap, identify the bulb's energy output, and mark where a magnetic field forms.

Ways to Teach It
Build a battery-and-bulb circuit, test foil, wood, and rubber in the gap, then place a compass beside the closed wire.
Explain why a rubbed balloon sticks to a wall but cannot keep a lamp lit, using static charge and current.
Play a card sort matching devices to radiant, mechanical, or thermal outputs, then justify one disputed match.
Inspect a flashlight or small fan, trace its closed circuit, and name where electrical energy changes form.
