What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace energy from sunlight into glucose made by plants, then through food webs. They compare photosynthesis and cellular respiration by identifying inputs, outputs, cell locations, and energy changes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use models or equations to show how the products of one process become reactants in the other. They can explain why producers support most food webs and why both plants and animals perform cellular respiration.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say plants get food from soil or treat sunlight as matter. They may think only animals perform cellular respiration. They also confuse matter cycling with energy flowing through an ecosystem.
How to Assess It
- Give students a diagram with the Sun, grass, and a rabbit. Ask them to trace energy and label where photosynthesis and cellular respiration occur.

Ways to Teach It
Run a leaf disk flotation test under light and darkness, then graph how many disks rise each minute.
Ask students to explain how energy in a sandwich began with sunlight, using producer, consumer, glucose, and respiration.
Use reaction-card relay teams to sort photosynthesis and respiration reactants, products, cell locations, and energy changes.
Analyze a sealed terrarium and predict how changing light hours would affect plant growth, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and animal survival.
