What Students Need to Do
- Students trace energy from the Sun into fuels, food webs, weather, and other Earth systems. They compare radiation, conduction, and convection, then identify energy changes in common devices. They also explain how incoming and outgoing energy affect Earth.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label the energy source, transfer method, and transformations in a diagram or scenario. They can explain how solar energy drives a food chain, wind, or the water cycle. They recognize that energy changes form rather than disappearing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think energy is used up or that every energy source comes directly from the Sun. They often say heat rises, when warm fluids rise through convection. They may confuse radiation with radioactivity or assume conduction happens only in metals.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: Trace energy from sunlight to a toaster heating bread, then identify one transformation and each possible transfer method. Add one sentence explaining where the energy goes afterward.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a lamp, a metal spoon in warm water, and colored water in a clear heated container to model energy transfer.
Ask students to explain how energy from the Sun could become energy used by their muscles during lunch recess.
Give pairs source, transfer, and transformation cards, then have them build and defend three accurate energy chains.
Have students inspect one classroom appliance and trace its energy source, useful output, and energy released to the surroundings.
