What Students Need to Do

Students identify the energy forms entering and leaving a device or process. They trace a sequence of transformations and explain where useful and unwanted energy goes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly label each step in an energy transformation, such as chemical to electrical to light and thermal energy. They explain that energy changes form rather than disappearing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say energy is created, destroyed, or used up. They may confuse energy forms with energy sources, or overlook thermal and sound energy as outputs.

How to Assess It

Give students a diagram of a battery-powered flashlight. Ask them to label each energy transformation and identify one useful output and one unwanted output.
