Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students trace energy through devices and systems, naming each form before and after a change. They explain how the transformation serves a need such as heating, transportation, lighting, or communication.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can analyze a device such as a toaster, electric fan, or solar panel and identify its energy changes. The student also identifies useful and unwanted outputs without claiming energy disappeared.
Common Misconceptions: Students may say energy is used up or created by a device. They may confuse an energy source, such as gasoline, with an energy form, such as chemical energy. They may overlook heat and sound as outputs.
How to Assess It: Give students a diagram of a battery-powered fan. Ask them to label each energy transformation, identify the useful output, and name one unwanted output.

Lesson moves

Build a battery circuit with a motor, bulb, or buzzer, then label the chemical, electrical, motion, light, sound, and thermal energy.
Write which energy transformations best meet one need: heating a home, moving people, pumping water, or sending a message.
Sort device cards by input and output energy, then challenge partners to find missing thermal or sound outputs.
Conduct a classroom energy audit, identifying how lights, fans, computers, and heaters transform energy to meet specific needs.
