Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
7.CE.2 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 7.CE.2.a
Given a proportional relationship between two quantities, create and use a ratio table to determine missing values.
- 7.CE.2.b
Write and solve a proportion that represents a proportional relationship between two quantities to find a missing value, including problems in context.
- 7.CE.2.c
Apply proportional reasoning to solve problems in context, including converting units of measurement, when given the conversion factor.
- 7.CE.2.d
Estimate and determine the percentage of a given whole number, including but not limited to the use of benchmark percentages.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use ratio tables and proportion equations to find missing values in proportional situations. They apply scale factors to unit conversions. They estimate and calculate a percent of a whole number using benchmarks such as 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100%.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students complete ratio tables and solve proportion equations while keeping quantities in the correct order. They convert units with a given factor and estimate percentages using benchmarks before calculating exact answers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add the same amount instead of multiplying by the same factor. They may reverse ratios, cross multiply incorrectly, or treat 25% as 25. Unit labels are often dropped during conversions.
How to Assess It
- Use a three-part exit ticket: complete a ratio table for 3 notebooks costing $6, convert 5 feet to inches, and find 20% of 70.

Ways to Teach It
Mix colored water in measuring cups using a 1:3 ratio, then scale the recipe and record each mixture in a ratio table.
Ask students to explain whether 4 tickets for $10 and 10 tickets for $25 show the same proportional relationship.
Play Ratio Table Relay, where teams draw cards with missing values and earn a point by completing each table correctly.
Have students compare sale prices for three store items by estimating and then calculating each discount percentage.
